Being a gentleman

How to be a perfect guest

Be a Perfect Guest in the 21st Century

Your mother’s missive to “Be polite!” might suffice to help you get by as a tolerable guest. But if you really want to shine as an exceptional and always-welcome guest, you may want to add a trick or two to your traveling bag.

Last week we looked at how to be the perfect host in the 21st century, and now we’re back with a companion guide to help you hone your skills as an honored guest. Like the hosting guide, we consider this a “best practice” compilation of tips and tricks. It’s by no means the only way, and for many relationships it may be overly formal at times. You should adjust the tips according to your relationship with your host, your personal financial situation, and other factors which play into the visit.

On the surface the principle responsibility of a guest might be to enjoy themselves above all else. The real responsibility of the guest, when staying with people not in the business of running a bed and breakfast, is not to burden the host. Whether you’re being hosted by your brother, distant relative, or the friend of a friend, your goal in playing the role of guest should be to ensure the host would invite you to return again and again.

How to Be the Perfect Host in the 21st Century

Being a good host in the 21st century isn’t what it used to be. Your guests have to deal with Wi-Fi passwords, confusing home theaters, and more. Next time you’ve got guests, blow them away with your sophisticated, 21st-century hosting skills.

While many traditions have gone by the wayside over the years, being a spectacular host has never gone out of style. With a tiny bit of planning and thoughtfulness, you can go from being just a person that put a roof over your friend’s head to being an awesome host that makes their time at your place memorable.

Preparing for house guests is a dual effort. Most people think only of the preparation for part like tidying up but not the preparation of part like getting information from your guests. Both are important but we’ll start off discussing preparations made on behalf of the guest.

Just… wow.

I am picking myself up from being blown over.  I just watched a video about a guy that built a really remarkable R2-D2 model.  It’s radio-controlled and fully articulated.  It’s really amazing.

What’s got me blown over though is what the guy did and does with it.  Sure, having a fully working model like that is just intrinsicly cool.  But this fella didn’t stop there…

He has used his model in a variety of public venues… lots of them for charity.  There was a run/walk for Down’s Syndrome where his R2-D2 showed up.  There was a visit to a children’s hospital… <whew…> Imagine how happy this guy made those kids just by having his robot show up.  Just… wow.

Making R2-D2

One of the best men in history

Fred Rogers (a.k.a. Mr. Rogers) taught many of us lots of valuable lessons.  One of his lessons that is resonating with me lately is “taking your time and doing things right”.  I can hear him singing it in my head right now…

There are a lot of things we just rush through.  I don’t know if it’s just modern society or if it’s an American thing.  I enjoy taking my time while I shave.  If I shave in less than 30 minutes, I didn’t do it right.

There are lots of things where performing the preparation properly or deliberately delivers most of the satisfaction.  The Japanese tea ceremony comes to mind when I think of the deliberate preparation.

Kindness is its own reward

I enjoy being kind to people.  I am a firm believer in Karma.  I’ve tried to setup a website called the Karma Bank or something like that.  Taken… oh well.

I enjoy being kind to people.  What comes around eventually goes around.  Kindness is, of course, its own reward.  However it’s nice having the belief that it’ll eventually pay off.

There’s nothing in particular I’ve done today or anything like that.  Sometimes, kindness is just not being mean.  Sometimes, it’s more proactive than that.  Holding a door for someone, giving a nice smile and a nice greeting, simply offering to help out with something, there are endless ways to be kind.

I must be in a good mood without knowing it.  :-)

There are men and then there are gentlemen

Can you be a gentleman without first being a man?  What is it to be a man?  What is it to be a gentleman?  These are the topics I’ll ponder in this category.
